Bye bye Australia!

Me again, this time from Melbourne.

Last week Anko and I made the last bit of our road trip, only about 1100 km from Adelaide to Melbourne along the great Ocean road. We saw some amazing landscapes there, very spectacular coastline.
Also along one piece of the road, was a eucalyptus tree forest where there were loads of koala bears in the trees! Without exaggerating, there was a almost a koala in every tree. Very special to see that! We decided to have lunch next to the road underneath those trees and koala, until we noticed that one koala bear was almost shitting on top of us. So we moved a little bit to avoid unwanted lumps in our coffee..

We decided to camp on a hidden spot instead of a campsite, because they charge 35 dollars a night along the Great Ocean Road. We found a little road into a forest, just 20m from the road but perfectly out of sight. Only that night it rained. So the 20m we drove down had turned into a mudpool overnight. Getting out of there ourselves was going to be impossible. So I walked down the road to a nearby farm, and luckily the farmer was a pretty friendly guy who was willing to pull our car out of there. So despite some sneering (but justified) jokes from the farmer and some extra stress for Anko who had ran out of cigarettes we got out of there ok.
The next day (which was the last night in the car) we camped on a beautiful spot on a hillside, with view on the coastline. Behind us there were koala's in the trees and we also saw some wallabies (small kangaroos) crossing the road that evening. Couldnt have been a better end of our road trip!

Melbourne is quite comparable to Sydney. Lot of skyscrapers, very clean, lot of parks, shops, and a melting pot of people. The main difference is all the sports stadiums in Melbourne. This morning I went for a run around the city, and I saw the Rod Laver Arena (tennis), the Grand Prix Circuit of Melbourne, the football stadium, the 1956 olympic stadium which was being torn down at the moment, and some more of the city.
I also bought a new camera after all because i want to make some pictures of New Zealand myself. For the interested reader: a Nikon S2500 in black.

Tomorrow morning I am leaving Australia and heading for New Zealand! We rented a small van this time, which probably is slower than the spaceship we had before. But then again you can sit in the back in this thing, which may be nice because NZ has a cold and wet climate.. Still, Anko and I are really looking forward to seeing the scenery there!

Cheers, Jelle

    Paul:

    Hey Jelle,

Ik dacht eerlijk gezegd dat je ondertussen weer terug was in Nederland. Geniet nog van je laatste weken in Nieuw Zeeland. Als je terug bent, moeten we maar weer eens wat gaan drinken in Sittard.

    groetjes,

    Paul
